I just want to solve impossible problems. Like building a credit card processor from scratch. Or launching too ambitious of a product in not enough time with not enough resourcesโthe fun stuff.

Software DeveloperCube Medical Solutions Inc. May 2014 - Aug 2014Developed a surgical device that enables doctors to visualize a patientโs internal anatomy, segmented from medical images, using augmented reality. The anatomy is presented in the correct anatomical position, scale, and orientation, and thus the user can look around the patient to navigate around the augmented anatomy.Tools and languages used: C/C++, CMake, Git, Google Test, OpenCV, OpenGL.

Software Engineering InternCalgary Image Processing And Analysis Centre May 2012 - Aug 2013Developed Tactics, an application for planning stereotactic neurosurgery for the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. The application is currently being used to plan surgeries to diagnose and treat epilepsy as well as biopsy brain tumours. The application was written in C++ using Qt4.8 and VTK5.10. The application is currently being open-sourced, and is free to download for surgeons to use across the world. An interactive/agile development plan was using to develop the application, and product delivery was conducted within six months of beginning the project. Test-driven development was used to ensure a robust application. Biweekly meetings with neurosurgeons were used to gather frequent feedback, and thus guide development of the application.Developed an application to analyze the rate of blood flow in the brain by converting the brightness of the blood in contrast-enhanced magnetic-resonance images into a concentration of contrast present within the blood. The application was developed for the Canadian Atherosclerosis Imaging Network to combat atherosclerosis as well as its manifestations such as stroke. The application was written in C++ using Qt4.8, ALGLIB3.6 and VTK5.10.Developed a framework to facilitate rapid application development at the centre. The framework was developed as an extra-curricular activity and has been adopted as the underlying framework for new applications within the centre.Developed a set of wrapper-classes for VTK's rendering windows and renderer classes. The wrapper-classes allow the user to create dynamic renderer layouts by providing a hierarchy of parent and children view objects.Presented a poster on the performance implications of performing singular-value-decomposition-based deconvolutions in C++ versus Matlab.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research AssistantFoothills Hospital May 2011 - Aug 2011Designed a hardware configuration and software application to facilitate state of the art real-time three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging. The application was written in C++ using several open source libraries such as the Qt 4.7 framework, Fastest Fourier Transform in the West (FFTW), and the Visualization Toolkit (VTK). Programming concepts such as multi-threading, socket networking, graphical user interfaces, and events were used within the application. The application was developed, tested, and run on openSUSE 11.4. Git was used to develop and merge additional functionality into the system and maintain versioning.Presented summer research and application prototype to colleagues and supervisors.Conducted a contrast inflow experiment to verify application functionality. An artificial artery was connected to a circulating water pump and was placed in the magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The signal was then suppressed to provide a clear render scene. Contrast was then injected into the pump resulting in a visualization of the contrast passing through the artery in real-time.Authored and submitted an abstract to Biomedical Engineering and Angiography conferences. Presented a poster detailing the application at the 2011 Banff Biomedical Engineering Conference. The presentation was selected as a finalist for the poster competition. Co-authored an abstract based on the application that has been presented in Melbourne, Australia at the ISMRM conference in May 2012.

Summer Student (Engineering Consultant)Spry Energy Ltd. May 2010 - Aug 2010Created/submitted important regulatory submissions for the efficient production of oil from the Pembina Cardium formation in central Alberta.Analyzed both current and historic well production data for Spry wells in the Killam field to determine the source of irregular, inefficient production of gas. The analysis lead to potential solutions to improve production and revenue.Created interactive, dynamic spreadsheets for easy display of historical Western Canada gas production data. The spreadsheets contained macros in Visual Basic and forecasting models for estimating future trends.Created a database into which the geologists could import raw data and export processed results as graphical overlays in the geoScout GIS mapping software.
