The earthquake left a trail of havoc and destruction that claimed several lives. It also left a lot of questions unanswered. What are the implications of having a fault line running across population centers, directly under major roads and bridges? Is it enough to repair the damaged roads, bridges and buildings? Is there a need to transfer and build these roads in safer areas? Will an earthquake of such magnitude happen again? When I migrated to Manila from the Visayas, I established own company, Excalibur Pty. Enterprises, and successfully engaged in the waterproofing specialty contractor business.

It was the first company that I put up, which catered to the housing needs of public school teachers. Tapping into the reserves of the then newly introduced Pag-IBIG Fund, it showed initial success, but was stunted by the inflation and uncertainties that followed the assassination of Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. in August 21, 1983.
