I underwent a significant personal change when I moved from Japan to the US in my first year of high school. Everything went upside down from language, culture, and organization. And it came all at once with a tight deadline to adopt, and I struggled initially. But I was able to make a successful transition by the end of the school year. How? It was because of my teachers and counselors who provided direction and guidance. It was because of my friends and family who provided support and encouragement. And the ESL curriculum provided structure and process for me to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge.We all have experienced changes, big and small, throughout our careers. Some were successful, and some might not. But the ones that went successfully likely had the same success factors as my high school experience. We all know what we need and want to make a successful transition. Yet, too often, organizations think that people can make a change with a flip of a switch. And wonder, in the end, why their people did not adopt the transformation they wanted. Tools and methodologies are available to assist a change. Yet just utilizing those tools will not lead to a successful transition. The mindset of practitioners who use those tools determines effectiveness. An empathetic, people-centric perspective based on my experience made me a successful Change Manager.
