Working on a one-to-one basis with a pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the infant department, implementing Applied Behaviour Analysis strategies in the classroom.The role also included covering whole class lessons, helping on trips and helping all students within the classroom.

I worked as a Therapist/Tutor for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, using Applied Behaviour Analysis. This used various behavioural techniques from psychological backgrounds to modify behaviour and teach language/social skills. I received training in this from an Autism charity, as well as learning on the job.

I helped to run a Support Group for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders up to the age of 15, their siblings and their parents. I co-ordinated activities and supervised children at all times. I also helped them with things related to their conditions, such as small talk. I have worked closely with a trainee Clinical Psychologist to run this support group.

This job entailed working with school and college students. I have mentored both Gifted and Talented and less able students to raise aspirations, inform them about university, help with any work they have, and run projects with them. I also worked on the University open days, showing prospective students and their parents around the university and giving.

I was involved in helping with a large research project involving academics in the Psychology department of the University of Southampton. I have carried out research to help guide focus group questions on the topic of their experiences with Sex and Relationship Education within their children’s school, in order to help develop the Education system.

In this voluntary, elected post, I was the lead student representative for all Psychology students, and managed a team of twelve student course representatives. I was responsible for listening to all student views and taking issues to members of staff. I had regular meetings with the heads of the department, discussing and resolving issues such as feedback.

One of my optional modules in my degree programme requires me to be a teaching assistant at a Primary School. I am based in a Year 2 class, and assist with whole class learning, one on one work, and the Nurture Group.

This post required me to update a “What to do” guide for parents and carers of children and young people with additional needs. I used many computer packages and greatly improved my communication skills with this job as I had to contact many different organisations to confirm accessibility information, as well as discussing with many members of the Rose.
