My career with News Limited spanned more than 15 years starting as a copy person, winning a cadetship on The Australian Newspaper, graduating to become the first female sports writer on The Australian and then also becoming the first female soccer writer in Australia.I was fortunate to cover the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games which was the highlight of my sports writing career. Shortly after, and following an unplanned visit to the Middle East I developed a strong passion for the politics of the ME and asked to be moved to the Foreign Desk at The Australian so I could immerse myself in that topic. Two years later in 1990 I left Australia to cover the Arab Summit in Iraq where I met with many Arab leaders including Yasser Arafat and increased my understanding of the complexities of the crises that engrossed the region and impacted the world. I settled in London for two years working at The Times newspaper groups, The MBC Network as well as Channel 4 News as a TV news producer. It was the most exciting, eye opening and enthralling time of my life. I returned to Australia in 1992 to take up the post of Assistant Foreign Editor at The Australian whilst returning to University to pursue greater studies in International Relations, ME history and politics etc. In 1993, I was sent by The Australian to cover the Middle East Peace Treaty signed by Israel and Jordan in Eilat in Israel and witnessed history in the making as President Bill Clinton, King Abdullah of Jordan and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin sign the Treaty. One of the most incredible experiences of my life. On that same trip I traveled to the Gaza Strip and met with and interviewed the Religious leader of Hamas who would later become its leader. In a front page article published in The Australian newspaper, I recounted the misery of life in Gaza that gave meaning to the hundreds of suicide bombers who gave up their lives to defend what they believed was a just cause.
