It has been my honor and pleasure to be in healthcare for well over forty years. To say I have both seen many changes and experienced many changes would be quite the understatement. Some of the most important work I have done-has occurred recently. For the past several years I have worked on developing department and hospital cultures. It turns out to be one of the most important aspects to recruitment and retention- based on recent data. But I have another surprise for those who are not willing to go there. It can be transformative to Service and Quality! I have been using principles of positive psychology-and creating positive mindset to influence hospital culture in a positive and meaningful way. To focus on creating a healthy work environment, through the development of a healthy workforce. The result has been substantial-and validates the research. The challenge for us as leaders is to avoid looking at these problems through the same lenses we always have-and to be inclusive and innovative in our thinking.
