The Foundational AI for Wind Energy project aims to develop a robust set of AI/ML benchmark datasets, problems, and metrics for wind energy research to facilitate a systematic approach to compare emerging AI/ML technologies. These datasets will span scales from the global to turbine level and enable multi-fidelity methods. Worked in the National Wind Technology Center on:• The H2@Scale initiative to advance affordable green hydrogen by optimizing hybrid plant designs for H2 production in a collaborative project with GE Renewable Energy and Nel Hydrogen. - Developed a dynamic PEM electrolyzer model which predicts hydrogen production from a wind power input signal • Energy Clusters Offshore (ECO), to develop and validate a technical approach to studying, designing, and optimizing hybrid offshore energy systems. These systems include renewable electricity generation, energy storage, and renewable fuel technologies such as marine hydrokinetics, offshore solar, offshore wind, electrolysis, H2 production, and NH3 production for various use cases.• Development of the Hybrid Optimization and Performance Platform (HOPP), an open source modeling tool for designing hybrid renewable energy systems. Developmental efforts include: - Integrated OpenMDAO into the Hybrid Optimization Performance Platform (HOPP) to enable multi-disciplinary analysis and optimization in the design and modeling of hybrid renewable energy systems - Creation of jupyter notebooks to showcase examples, case studies, and toolkit capabilities.• Established data pipelines between NREL modeling tools and NASA POWER API to integrate global solar and wind resource data and increase accessibility of NREL tools to users worldwide

Undergraduate Researcher via the U.S. Department of Energy's SULI program.Throughout the 10 week summer internship program I worked in the National Wind Technology Center supporting the ARPA-E ATLANTIS program. We developed a floating platform model for the IEA 15-MW 240 meter offshore reference wind turbine via inverse design within the WEIS toolkit. We identified and helped correct over 12 bugs within the code to improve the WEIS workflow and modeling accuracy. The floating platform model was optimized and the maximum percent difference between the reference model and the optimized WEIS model properties was decreased from 26.37% to 0.53%. The results of this research will immediately impact all future studies of the IEA 15-MW reference turbine within WEIS and WISDEM. Future work will use the developed model as the base design for higher fidelity optimizations of the system and to validate WEIS functionality in project benchmark cases.WEIS (Wind Energy with Integrated Servo-control) is a multifidelity open-source numerical modeling tool that performs controls co-design to model, analyze, and optimize floating offshore wind turbine systems. WEIS combines multiple tools to enable multidisciplinary design and optimization such as WISDEM, OpenFAST, TurbSIM, ROSCO, and OpenMDAO.
