As an integral part of Yurii Piadyk's Ph.D. thesis, our study focused on the correlation between Indoor Spaces Occupancy and the Performance of HVAC Systems. Over the course of eight months, we collaborated closely with Yurii to conduct this research, with the intention of publishing our findings to inform decision-makers about the potential impact of developing HVAC systems with extended sensors that align with occupancy patterns, thereby reducing energy consumption.Highlights of our work include:• Collaborated with a dedicated team of three to construct a sensor equipped with dual 5 MP cameras, enabling accurate object detection. We utilized the Reconfigurable Environmental Intelligence Platform (REIP) for efficient prototyping of a fast sensor network, facilitating real-time measurements of temperature and humidity.• Developed a Python code for seamless data acquisition, ensuring reliable and precise data collection throughout the study.• Conducted an in-depth analysis of the collected data, comparing it with the data generated by the HVAC system. Our objective was to explore the correlation between occupancy levels in the areas where our sensors were deployed and the HVAC system's performance. We also examined the system's operational schedule to identify any potential energy waste.One notable outcome of our study was that our sensors demonstrated 40% greater reliability in accurately measuring temperature and humidity compared to the built-in sensors of the HVAC system.By shedding light on the relationship between occupancy and HVAC system performance, our research has the potential to drive advancements in energy-efficient building management. We are excited about the opportunity to contribute to the broader understanding of this field and the potential for positive environmental impact.
