Apr 2017 - Oct 2017

Lieutenant - Patrol Division

Farmington, New Mexico

As a Lieutenant in the Patrol Division, I expanded my supervision role to include several first line supervisors and civilian employees like the Court Liaison. This was very rewarding as I saw this employee move the department and county forward with a program to go paperless and her satisfaction when the program was expanded county-wide. I continued with using my budgeting skills with a Division budget and learned new skills in grant writing and administration. I also had the opportunity to develop two department-wide programs from the bottom up. In the first program, I was responsible for working with a vendor and Human Resources personnel to implement new scheduling software. Our department was picked to implement the software and work out any issues so that it could be adopted city-wide. In the second program, I was responsible for implementing a Federal initiative called Data Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety. This involved coming up with new ways for us to analyze data and hiring personnel to act as Crime Analysts. This was especially challenging because it was a whole new way of using our data and personnel to deal with crime issues within the city.

Apr 2015 - Apr 2017

Director - San Juan County Criminal Justice Training Authority (Sjccjta)

San Juan County

This was probably one of the most satisfying positions I have ever held in my career. During this time, I oversaw one of the State of New Mexico's Basic Police Officer Academies. Here, I was able to use my problem solving abilities to expand the duties of the academy from just training new recruits to also providing yearly training to over 300 officers that were already certified. My staff and I were able to produce balanced budgets (the first in over a decade), re-vamp and re-start a degree program with a local college, and develop multiple new revenue streams that allowed us to drastically improve the services we provided without increasing any costs. Because of this, my staff was recognized by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Board for their performance and professionalism.Using my public engagement skills, I was able to act as a liaison to the college, multiple agencies, and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and was selected as a Disciplinary Hearing Officer for the State of New Mexico. In addition, as a liaison, I was able to identify training needs common to multiple agencies and provide that training in such a way that multiple agencies realized monetary savings due to cooperation. As a new skill, I was able to learn about Project Management on a much larger scale. I was able to oversee multiple projects for the maintenance, improvement, and expansion of a 44-acre training facility that included a driving track, multiple firing ranges, and various classroom facilities.

Jul 2011 - Apr 2015

Sergeant - Farmington Police Department Training Division

City Of Farmington

For eight months, I was assigned to oversee the Farmington Police Department's Training Division. During this time, I expanded my supervisory duties relating to Field Training Officers to cover the whole Program. In addition to this, I was able to use my experience in the different areas within the Department to start identifying training needs for a greater number of officers. I also was able to look at the division from the outside and re-organize the duties while expanding the personnel. This allowed us to implement a new inventory system and fix some major issues with the armory while increasing oversight and accountability over the department's weapons.

May 2011 - Dec 2011

Officer / Corporal / Sergeant - Farmington Police Department Patrol Division

City Of Farmington

As a Farmington Police Officer, I was responsible for conducting law enforcement activities and assisting citizens throughout the City of Farmington. Using my previous experience, I started handling more complex and different investigations. Because of this experience, I also became a Field Training Officer and started training at the Regional Police Academy. As an officer, I continued to utilize my problem solving skills and started the first Sex Offender Residency Check program in San Juan County. As a Corporal, I worked extensively with the Accreditation Program / CALEA (a compliance program for Law Enforcement agencies) and, using my skills with the public, oversaw the Citizen's Police Academy. After being promoted to Sergeant, I continued to try and promote teamwork while evaluating officer's actions during their shifts and trying to develop their specific skills. I continued to work on my supervisory skills with my responsibility for a larger number of officers and became more proficient at scheduling, discipline, evaluating training needs, and supervising the Field Training Officers on my shift. Many of the officers on my shift received multiple Officer of the Quarter and Year awards, assignments they requested to specialty units, and promotions due to their hard work and dedication.Eventually, my skills were tested and developed further through extra duty assignments. These included evaluating manpower allocation department-wide, basic Internal Affairs investigations, development/review of new City Ordinances, and supervision of the Vision Team (a team of officers and supervisors responsible for looking at solutions to chronic problems).

Jul 2002 - May 2011

District Wildlife Officer / District Wildlife Supervisor

New Mexico Department Of Game And Fish

State Of New Mexico

As a District Wildlife Officer, I was stationed in Navajo Dam, Santa Rosa, Capitan, and Roswell. During this time, I investigated a variety of misdemeanor and felony crimes and oversaw forfeitures and prosecutions in my districts. I also used my public speaking and journalism skills to conduct educational activities involving the public such as fishing clinics, hunter ed classes, and hosting radio and public television programs related to wildlife. As I became more proficient, I started teaching my first classes in law enforcement instruction. As I became more confident, I looked for solutions for problems in my district as well as state-wide and started an internship program utilizing wildlife students from local colleges to assist game wardens in trapping and transplanting nuisance wildlife. As a District Wildlife Supervisor in Roswell, I learned how to take a step back from day-to-day activities that I had become accustomed to and starting learning how to supervise and lead. I was responsible for four other officers that lived up to three hours away from me. I learned how to set goals for others and hold them accountable while supervising them remotely. I coordinated activities among all of these officers and started utilizing skills I had learned in banking and accounting classes to manage budgets and work within financial constraints. I used lessons learned from previous supervisors to enact discipline and create a cooperative work environment. I continued using my journalism and public affairs skills and wrote several articles for the department and for a insert in a statewide newspaper while continuing to appear on television and radio. During this time, I was also recognized by the New Mexico Senate for excellent customer/public service.
