My areas of focus as a crime reporter include gun violence, police accountability and human trafficking. For the cannabis beat, I focus on regulations, cultivation, retail sales and the illicit market.

Working as a member of the Free Press web team, I'm responsible for online content for the Free Press, as well as our five sister papers: The Sarnia Observer, the Chatham Daily News, the St. Thomas-Times Journal, the Stratford Beacon Herald and the Woodstock Sentinel-Review. My main responsibility is packaging content -- writing headlines, editing photos and attaching bells and whistles like interactive maps, poll questions and related coverage to stories. All the while I'm using Google Analytics to maximize web traffic. (hey, I thought I got into journalism to escape numbers -- guess not!) Other duties include moderating online comments (ugh...), managing the newspaper's Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, and adding regional, national and international news to the six websites. I also get to tap my tech-savvy side, using social media tools like ScribbleLive and Storify to cover spot news and sporting events. Thankfully, in between all that, I still get to squeeze in some good old fashioned reporting, particularly breaking news -- my true journalism love.

Teaching social media management, a mandatory course in the post-graduate digital communication management program. The four-month course equips students with the skills and knowledge to create and manage media strategies to boost engagement, build a brand and protect an online reputation.

The Fiji Daily Post, 2009 - 2010As the recipient of the International Development Research Centre Journalism Award, I traveled to Suva, Fiji, to work as a reporter and write about Canadian nation building initiatives in a developing country. In addition to my reporting duties, I wrote sections and contributed photographs to a journalism training manual, which is being used to train local reporters. I also started a blog, Sleepless in Suva, which I regularly update with text, pictures and videos documenting my experiences abroad.

Working as a multimedia reporter, I covering local news in the Sarnia-Lambton region. In addition to writing stories I also took photographs, shot and cut video, wrote columns, created video blogs and updated the newspaper's website, www.theobserver.ca.
