About Dale Sharp, Chst
Being adaptable led to me being an accidental safety pro. Every role I have had in my history of working has opened doors I hadn’t imagined I’d walk through. I enjoy learning and growing. The commercial painting warehouse that I was asked to put in order utilized some skills I had brought with me: Purchasing, inventory control, managing a small team. I even got to dust off my tools and cabinetry skills. But the role added to my abilities heavy rental equipment logistics, fleet management, coordinating regulatory inspections, and most importantly, and safety oversight.Safety started pretty small with writing incident reports and being asked if I would be comfortable delivering in-person refresher trainings to the whole company. [Would a trained actor be comfortable?!] I recall spending a good amount of time researching respiratory protection and eventually taking much of the content from an L&I training toolkit, then tailoring the photos and spoken portion of the presentation to the painting industry. It went very well. After I had won a couple of Employee of the Quarter awards and gotten the warehouse tightened up, the new position of safety manager was created to meet the needs of a fast-growing company. By then I’d attended numerous classes, seminars, etc., and learned how to conduct investigations, establish safety committees, and much more. Over the next 8 years, bit by bit, more and more was directed to me. OSHA logs, record keeping, return-to-work management, claims management, etc. And so it has gone. Whatever was asked of me that I had not done before led to learning and growth.Like being given the chance to work with my hands building cabinets, casework and furniture, only to learn drafting, purchasing, estimating and selling.Or starting as a stocker in a small retail gift store and skipping like a stone through being an assistant store manager, to store manager and, lastly, assistant operations manager helping to oversee eight stores. And a job service ad that had me leveling dirt with a shovel and rake for the first few days, but by the end of that temporary summer job I’d experience framing, roofing, siding, insulating, drywalling, and painting two new houses. Then there was the trout hatchery job…
