Everything written here is a journal for my kids, at 8 and 10 years old, about their dad's professional life, as of 65 years old, meant to entertain and inform them. More to come.Through equal parts planning, luck, and randomness, I've had a fun, diverse 40-year career as a data and technology strategist, entrepreneur, and investor—16 years in the space and defense sector and 24 years in healthcare. I served on the “Doomsday Plane” as a nuclear command, control, communications, and intelligence officer in the US Air Force, where I hacked the Joint Chiefs of Staff Alerting Network from a pay phone in a bar. I've been a nuclear threat analyst for the START Treaty and National Security Agency; a data and analytics strategist for Intel Corp; a CIO and Chief Analytics Officer at Intermountain Healthcare, Northwestern University Medicine, and the Cayman Islands National Health System; Senior Data Strategist for Alberta Innovates; the US Drug Enforcement Administration; and the Centers for Disease Control; Chief Product and Technology Officer for Health Catalyst leading to a $1B IPO; Chief Strategy Officer at Intelligent Medical Objects leading to a $1.61B exit. I currently serve on the Board for Dendritic Health and AllClearID/Health Bank One; and Executive Partner at Ardan Equity.I was once known as a data technologist, but now seem more valuable as a data psychologist— i.e., the soft skills surrounding the collection, interpretation, governance, and ethics of data. Using data to affect change and drive innovation starts by understanding the way humans behave and react in response to data.As the youngest of six, with great parents, I climbed mountains, bucked hay, worked horses, and herded cows with hard core, blue collar, rough and tough people in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Expectations were high, forgiveness low, mistakes costly, and there was a constant stream of challenges and problems to solve, constrained by the tools, time, and resources at your immediate disposal. You had to be creative, in real time. My father died, tied down to a hospital bed, choking while consciously intubated, when I was 17 years old. I closed his eyelids when he passed. I vowed never to allow a loved one to die like that again. That event put me on a very different academic and professional path than what I was planning, but, so far, it's going ok. More to come.
