I really enjoy what I do for work. And I appreciate the journey I've taken to get here.I studied at BYU. I first majored in history and loved the skills and education I received as part of that degree. I then studied accounting with my primary takeaway after graduating being that I never wanted to be an accountant--and learning that was worth every penny.My work experience prior to graduation was primarily in sales. So, following graduation, I kept working as a software sales rep. The pay was great, but after a couple of years I was ready for a change.While exploring different employment options, I ended up grabbing lunch with a friend and his business partner. They pitched me on joining them in building their property management company, Joseph Thomas. In a decision that still surprises me today, I left a well-paying career in software sales for a new industry and position that landed me a whopping starting salary of $1600 per month. But I was excited to jump in, grow the small company and earn a portion of the upside.After a few months of growing the management portfolio, we ventured into the entertainment industry by starting Getout Games as one of the original escape rooms in the country. My favorite thing about starting a company from scratch was the education. Every new decision and every new problem was a learning experience for me and I was committed to soaking it all in.Starting Getout Games was so fascinating to me that a few years later we ended up starting two new companies: Heber Hatchets and Backdoor BRGR. Again, new experiences and new challenges but it was always exciting. During this time we also invested in apartments. This provided us a very nice tortoise-and-hare approach to our business. The entertainment businesses seemed positioned for quick growth, while the real estate investments didn't pay much but we felt they had more long-term earning potential.This combination of high potential paired with slow and steady performance worked well for us. When Covid hit, the entertainment companies struggled with the new regulations that followed. During all the economic ups and downs of the pandemic, the real estate side of things stayed strong and steady.Looking to the future, we continue to invest and partner in real estate. We are also building a new entertainment option. It's been a great journey and I am so grateful for (1) a loving and supportive wife, (2) understanding and energetic kids and (3) partners and friends that have helped make so many hopes and dreams a reality.
