    For the past three years I have been an assistant to Drs. Harvey Borovetz and Timothy Maul in teaching the Artificial Organ classes at the University of Pittsburgh. These classes cover normal and pathophysiology of the cardiac, pulmonary, vascular and blood physiologic systems and potential replacement technologies for each system. My role in these courses was to assist in the grading of homework and exams, hold review sessions and office hours, and facilitating clinical visits to UPMC. These visits included trips to the Artificial Heart Program, UPMC Presbyterian Cardiac Operating Rooms, and UPMC/Procirca Perfusion Simulation Lab. Additionally, the class was taught distance learning to roughly 50 students at North Carolina A&T and we successfully brought all of these students to Pittsburgh for clinical visits at UPMC.

    While an undergrad at Pitt I worked on multiple artificial lung devices including a portable integrated artificial lung oxygenator for treatment of COPD and ARDS along with other lung problems that features a novel system for micromixing within the device. I also completed basic studies in the permeability of hollow fiber membranes used in blood oxygenators, and worked on coatings to improve the blood flow characteristics of various tubing and cannulae.
