Program Coordinator
Our initiative at the Kanien'keha Iakwateweienstha (literally "We are studying Mohawk") is to revitalize Kanien'keha (Mohawk) as a spoken and lived language in the territories which have been occupied by Haudenosaunee peoples since time immemorial. We bring together elders and youth to create a new generation of speakers and teachers. We blend together various curricula including the Kanien'keha Tsi Tewatati platform created by the Akwesasne Economic Development Agency (AEDA) as well as a series of textbooks authored by David Kanatawakhon-Maracle. In our last session we had attendance from 45 individuals representing numerous Onkwehonwe families in the Finger Lakes Region. The group's co-leadership (Marky Davidson and myself) are currently working on developing a Kanien'keha Language Gathering to be held in the Summer of 2015 at the new Seneca Arts and Culture Building located at the Ganondagan Historic Site.
