In 2018 after 4 very rewarding years at Florida Southern College, I joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. CS at UWL is a great fit for me with a faculty that is committed to undergraduate education while also pursuing research in a number of areas. As a bonus, I am no longer subject to the constant heat and humidity in Florida.At Florida Southern, I had the opportunity to found the Department of Computer Science, separating from the Department of Math and Computer Science in 2016. In several years, we doubled the number of CS majors and rolled out an entirely new curriculum. I'm very proud of what we were able to accomplish there.My research work is in applications of genetic algorithms. We examine problems such as path planning, the iterated prisoners dilemma, airline overbooking, and mass extinction. If you aren't familiar with genetic algorithms, what you need to know in a nutshell is that they are the coolest things since pitted olives. In slightly more detail, genetic algorithms apply the rules of Darwinian evolution to computationally expensive problems. It's a fascinating area.Prior to Florida Southern, I was at the Ohio State University from 1997 to 2009. I left OSU, reluctantly, to move to Switzerland for a few years. Everything you've heard about Switzerland is true: it is unbelievably beautiful, everything runs like, well, a Swiss watch, and it is incredibly expensive.
