Based in Vale's iron ore sales office in Shanghai, reported to the President with a three year mandate to enable the development of rapid business growth strategies in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Represented both Vale and Vale Inco on EHS concerns in the Asia region, including market product access interests internationally and those potentially impacting customers in the critical Asian market. Led a team of twelve, a total budget of $3M, responsible for supporting the EHS performance of seven refineries totaling over 50% of Vale Inco's global finished nickel production. Provided support also to Vale's pelletizing plants in Asia.ACCOMPLISHMENTS:• Effectively coached and mentored local EHS staff team of 12 and assisted new operations management in adopting a world class sustainability culture. By the end of 2008, all seven operations in Asia had been audited, scored, and ranked within the top ten plants owned by Vale Inco worldwide. • Saved Vale Inco Japan US$60M capital: Successfully mediated a cross-functional team to convince the Japanese government to change proposed EHS legislation to exempt Vale Inco Japan products based on their granular particle size (not an inhalation health hazard).• Effectively managed corporate sustainability risks and issues by building strong relationships with senior management, operations, and marketing, and externally, with government and non-governmental agencies. Developed set of KPI’s for Asia business that provided assurance of non-financial disclosure, transparent corporate reporting and successful stakeholder engagement.• Instrumental in developing a forward-looking global strategy for the nickel industry linking EHS issues, market preservation and market product development in the context of sustainable development and product stewardship. -

Brand new role established to pioneer global product stewardship programs for Vale Inco, from “company gate to final fate”. Lead in the development and expansion of leading-edge stewardship programs including: product take-back, recycling, package re-use and support for product waste recovery.ACCOMPLISHMENTS:• Key team player in enabling Vale Inco’s leading-edge sustainability R&D for new product applications for nickel, including: high-temperature nickel alloys in diesel particulate filter technology, nano-nickel catalyst use in fuel cells, enhanced nickel metal hydride technology in hybrid vehicles, new nickel-based lithium ion battery technology, and RF-shielding nickel coatings. • Evaluated market product and operational impact of regulatory and non-regulatory requirements and activities, initiating responsive programs and strategic interventions related to occupational exposure limits, pollution prevention programs, emissions, emergency preparedness, recycling, climate change, and other contingent financial environmental liabilities. Provided input to: Canadian Environmental Protection Act, European Union Directives including REACH, Dangerous Substances Directive and Restriction of Hazardous Substances, OECD guidelines on environmentally sound management of recycled materials, and Ontario and Manitoba Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety legislation.• Initiated and fostered development of a communication action plan that enabled the nickel industry to effectively counter inappropriate product bans and restrictions. Led team of 12 technical professionals and provided indirect supervision to eight individuals in more remote locations. Represented Ontario Operations on the Ontario Mining Legislative Review Committee and the Ontario Mining Association Health and Compensation Committee.ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • From Sudbury operations, persuaded all five Canadian operations to purchase and install a Canada-wide Web-based MSDS management system (Dolphin) that collectively saved all operations $500K annually. This Web-based system is still in place today.• Developed a KPI system for plant and mine managers to track occupational health program performance. This KPI scorecard system tallied one page for the President and drove compliance improvement by 80% in one year. The Occupational KPI system is still in place today. • Through Ontario Mining Legislative Review Committee, successfully chaired a tri-partite (management, labour, and government) subcommittee team to institute workable legislation for diesel emissions controls and lower occupational exposure limits for nickel. -
Coordinator, Emergency PreparednessVale Inco - Ontario Operations Mar 1998 - Feb 2000Responsible for leading all emergency preparedness programs in Sudbury and Port Colbourne, and representing the company to external emergency providers and agencies, including Emergency Measures Ontario, the Sudbury Emergency Preparedness Liaison Committee, and the Mining Association of Canada’s Crisis Management Guideline Development Group.• Chaired the City of Sudbury’s Emergency Preparedness Liaison Committee. Successfully led a realistic, but simulated truck and acid train car accident exercise since considered Sudbury’s best training exercise of the decade. The exercise involved fire, ambulance, police, Vale Inco personnel, contractors, and local media providing valuable feedback on improvement opportunities.
