Working as a fellow through the NIH Postbac IRTA program, I am performing full-time research at the Microfabrication and Microfluidics Unit as part of the Trans-NIH Shared Resource on Biomedical Engineering and Physical Science (BEPS). My project focuses on engineering microfluidic devices that mimic carotid bifurcation and look at sickle cell disease-mediated vascular remodeling. An additional project on mine focuses on the engineering and characterization of specialized fibrin microbeads in order to act as a scaffold for cartilage tissue regeneration.

Perfect Pair uses an extensive matching process to pair a resident in a local assisted or independent living facility with a college student volunteer in an effort to combat loneliness and isolations among seniors.

Working to refine an in-house 3D modeling and printing workflow at Michigan Medicine, we create and 3D print patient-specific models that can be used as an objective reference for surgical reconstruction. These paitnet-specfic models provide a template for the surgeons to use prior to or during procedures.

Alpha Epsilon Delta is a pre-professional honor society for undergraduate students preparing careers in the healthcare professions. We strive to build a community that embraces the best aspects of diversity, comradery, and professionalism.The mission of our society is to encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship; stimulate an appreciation of the importance of premedical education in the study of medicine; promote cooperation and contact between medical and premedical students and educators in developing an adequate program of premedical education; to bind together similarly interested students; and use its knowledge for the benefit of health organizations, charities, and the community.

This work focuses on optimizing small-scale microfluidic artificial lungs by improving device design and composition. Current experimental data helps to reduce clotting and improve longevity of the devices. The aim is to develop microfluidic artificial lungs which can operate without additional oxygen (using room air alone).

Research projects were aimed at helping SWDCJC better understand the needs of Southwest Detroit and to obtain funding to help the organization better address those needs. The Chief Executive Officer, Ms. JaNeice Jones, and I worked closely to complete a grant application regarding an outreach program for victims and survivors of human trafficking who are residing within Detroit. This internship was made available to me through the Detroit Community Engagement Research Program (DCERP) at the University of Michigan. Participation in DCERP also included biweekly meetings focused on the Detroit community with a cohort of students also engaging in internships at other nonprofits in Detroit.
