Chen wrote and directed Manhole (2004) and One Foot Off the Ground (2006). Variety called Manhole “a fine standard-bearer for high quality Chinese commercial cinema” and regarded One Foot Off the Ground as “[t]ightly written, highly accessible….” Critics at the San Francisco International Film Festival dubbed Manhole “a movie where the laughter makes you think.” These works are the first examples of what is expected to be a long string of intelligent and compelling films from this director who focuses on both culturally relevant and entertaining subject matter. One Foot Off The Ground was nominated for the Golden Rooster (Chinese Academy Award) for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress. His most recent film What Women Want (2011) featured Andy Lau and Gong Li in their first collaboration. He also wrote/director three web BMW short films in 2012. Currently, Chen is a valued writer-director signed to a “first look” deal by Huanxi Media Entertainment and collaborating with Huanxi Media on several feature film projects.Chen received his degree from and has served as an Associate Professor at the Beijing Film Academy. He has also starred in films and television series such as Genghis Khan (2010),Farewell, Vancouver(2004), Silver Hawk(2003), Beverly Hills Ninja (1993), Vanishing Sun (1995), Restless(1997), and Foreign Moon (1996).
