With obesity becoming the most prevalent threat to public health in the US and world wide, it is important to gain a greater understand of the physiology and basic cell biology behind this disease. My current research in the Tran lab at the KU Medical Center utilizes a genetic model of obesity to determine the molecular mechanisms that regulate the onset of obesity. Our current focus is to characterize the molecular and behavioral changes that are occurring prior to obesity onset. We hope to ultimately gain a more thorough understanding of physiology of obesity and potentially develop therapeutic strategies to combat the growing epidemic.
