The basis on any great song is a good rhythm section and a good rhythm section needs real drums played live with great feel and groove. However, recording drums is complicated. Assuming you've got a decent drummer, you need a studio with a great sounding room, a selection of microphones and a good sound engineer. Even with these in place, setting up and sound checking a drum kit for recording can be a time consuming and expensive process. Until now the only real alternative has been to use drum loops or programmed drums but this is far from ideal. Using loops from samples CDs means that the loops won't be unique to your song and consequently may detract from the originality and impact you want your song to have. Even if you do find an 'original' loop you like it is unlikely that it will have the necessary variations to it so that it can breath and develop with your song. Programming drums is only marginally better. Sure you can programme the parts to suit the song but it is unlikely that you will be able to get those programmed drums to sound as organic as the real thing: a real drummer playing real drums.
