About Damon Weiss
I am a Professional Engineer with over twenty years of civil engineering experience, with design experience in sustainable site design, water resources, GIS, municipal and transportation engineering. Although my engineering experience is generally diverse, my primary focus and passion has been towards urban greening, community resilience, and environmental sustainability. I am an active proponent of low-impact and green infrastructure design practices, and have been fortunate in my career to be involved in projects that included rain gardens, green roofs, porous pavement, and ecological wetlands. I also work regularly with a wide range of non-profits around the Pittsburgh region on various green infrastructure initiatives, related to planning, policy and implementation. I have been actively involved with 3 Rivers Wet Weather and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) as a member of the Green Infrastructure Network and am presently planning a large-scale green infrastructure design charrette in the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh, scheduled for March 2014. As a Board member of Allegheny Land Trust, I am similarly promoting green infrastructure initiatives, meeting regularly with community leaders and land banking experts as part of our Urban Greening Committee. As a sidenote to my engineering career, I am also proficient in computer science, artificial intelligence, sensor, robotics and various other innovative technologies. Eventually, my interests led me to pursue my Master’s degree in Advanced Infrastructure Systems at Carnegie Mellon University.
Listed skills include Stormwater Management, Civil Engineering, Water Resources, Erosion Control, and 46 others.

Principal
CurrentEthos Collaborative is a collective of integrative designers, scientists, and educators dedicated to realizing regenerative and resilient communities through collaborative planning, engineering, analysis, and shared learning. Our core competencies lie at the nexus of water, energy, climate, and community. The systems-thinking and life-cycle approach we employ honors the interconnected nature of ecological, economic, and socio-cultural systems.
Principal
Urban Rain Studio is a civil engineering consulting firm, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and specializing in green infrastructure design and water resources engineering within the urban environment. We strive to differentiate ourselves from traditional engineering firms by staying focused on the social, environmental and economic aspects of design – the triple bottom line of sustainability – and by executing our entire design process in accordance with this basic belief structure.
Project Manager, Civil Engineering
AE Works is a full-service architecture and engineering firm, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a strong emphasis in the design of healthcare and institutional facilities within the federal sector. As the site/civil lead within the organization, I work closely with architects, interior designers, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers on a wide range of inter-disciplinary projects. I have a strong belief that good design requires that there be synergy between the exterior site layout, the building appearance and the interior building space. As such, I strive to bring to the Design Team that unique "site perspective", using GIS, Civil 3D, renderings and other visual communication tools to address design issues relating to site topography, drainage patterns, utility locations, and environmental permitting requirements during the early stages of design, when such efforts have the most significant impact on the final product. I also work closely with the Business Development Team to identify new site-civil opportunities, within the local Western Pennsylvania region and in neighboring states.
Project Engineer, Transportation And Site/Civil Division
Led the water resources, land development and GIS design efforts for both the Transportation and Site/Civil Divisions at Pennoni Associates' Pittsburgh Office. Within the Transportation Division, responsibilities primarily included stormwater management and closed drainage design, hydrologic/hydraulic design of roadway culverts, design of accessory site components outside of the roadway, E&S / NPDES environmental permitting and preparation of waterway obstruction permits for in-stream work. Within the Site/Civil Division, responsibilities included all aspects of design from preparation of proposal to full production of construction documents for land development projects. Specific tasks included site layout, grading, design / coordination of sanitary sewer, water, natural gas, electrical and telecommunication infrastructure, design of E&S and stormwater management systems, preparation of E&S, NPDES and waterway obstruction permits, renderings and coordination with stakeholders. Typical clients included colleges and universities, local school districts, developers, and architecture firms. In addition to working with the Transportation and Site-Civil Divisions, I also worked as a GIS and software development resources within Pennoni Associates, as an organization, working on several large-scale GIS mapping projects, developing geodatabases and desktop and web-based GIS applications and exploring new GIS opportunities. Helped establish a GIS Experts Team within the organization.
Project Engineer, Municipal Division
Worked under the direction of multiple municipal engineers on a wide range of planning, land development review, ordinance writing and municipal support projects. Attended regular Planning Commission and Zoning Hearing Board meetings, supporting the designated Township Engineer and serving in his absence, as needed needed. Prepared GIS maps, renderings and other presentation materials, as needed. Supported the active of the designated Authority Engineer at several additional water and sewer authorities in the region. Provided plan review, coordination and construction inspector support to the Authority for the planning and construction of new infrastructure to support large-scale residential growth, including several wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, water booster stations and related utility lines, generation of Consumer Confidence Reports, Chapter 94 reports, drought contingency plans and Act 220 reports. Representative projects includes the coordination and implementation of a five-year wet weather remediation projection to reduce inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the existing sanitary sewer system, under a Consent Order from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP)
Staff Engineer
Generated structural analysis models of telecommunication towers and prepared structural analysis calculations of foundation and tower member capacities for one of the leading U.S. and international providers of wireless communications transmission infrastructure. Developed procedures and protocols relating to the sub-contracting of structural analyses to outside engineering consulting firms and acted as point-of-contact and quality-assurance. Developed a database to aid in the tracking of projects and deadline and the generation of purchase orders and invoices for the client.
Project Engineer
Worked as Staff Engineer on various commercial, industrial and retail building design projects in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Experience includes structural steel, concrete, composite, masonry, post-tension and tilt-up design. Representative projects include 1600 International Drive, McLean, VA – seven-story composite steel office building and Lowe’s retail store in Houston Texas.
