Dan Abramson was the founding Head Teacher of King’s College London Mathematics School, which opened in September 2014 as the first of a wave of state-funded specialist mathematics schools opened in partnership with flagship universities. Maths schools work with students aged 16-19 who have a particular aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics. They provide diverse, welcoming and engaging academic communities in which young mathematical scientists thrive, and aim to widen participation in degrees and careers in the mathematical sciences. King's College London Mathematics School regularly tops the Department for Education's A Level performance tables both for attainment and value added, and won The Times' Sixth Form of the Decade Award in 2021. Since its inception in 2020, Dan has played a leading role in MESME (Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence), which runs mathematics enrichment activities for students aged 11-16. MESME aims to double the number of students going on to PhDs in the mathematical sciences by 2035, with many more students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds following this excellence pathway.Dan is now working with all 11 maths schools (open or in pre-opening) in England, as the Interim CEO of U-Maths, a charity being formed to facilitate the success of the maths school programme. He has also taken up a role as Professor of Practice of Mathematics Education at King's College London, teaching mathematics to undergraduates and helping the university sector to deliver improved quality of education in mathematics. Dan was previously Head of Mathematics and at Highgate School in North London, where he established and led the school’s pioneering outreach program for teaching talented students in local state schools. He earned a first class degree in mathematics from Cambridge University as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics. He has a notable record of excellence in teaching, school leadership, innovative curriculum design and widening participation.Dan was awarded an OBE for services to education in 2023.
