I lead 4U’s technological innovations and platform capabilities. I'm formally trained as an empirical scientist and bring my love of complex systems and the underlying principles that govern their emergent behaviors to the art of building technological systems that drive business success. My background in molecular and cell biology includes studying under and publishing with the Nobel Laureate Dr. Randy Schekman. The analytical skills I honed as a biologist are complemented by over 15 years' experience successfully crafting well-instrumented, high-throughput, scalable software that perform core business functionality.I have nearly a decade of experience with effectively working closely with, and within, teams who are physically remote from me.I care deeply about the work I do and the processes by which that work is done and I strongly believe that happy and engaged people are successful people.

Principal EngineerCafepress.Com Sep 2006 - Dec 2016Calabasas, Ca, UsI served as the technical lead for CafePress Search, a highly scalable search engine infrastructure that handles millions of searches a day against a catalog of over a billion products while maintaining a median response time of ~25 ms (<100ms 95th percentile).I was promoted from Software Engineer to Senior Software Engineer in December, 2007 and then to Principal Engineer in December, 2009.Technologies: Java, Elasticsearch, Lucene, AWS (EC2, S3, ELB, Redshift, Data Pipeline, SQS, SMS, DynamoDB, CodeDeploy), Spring, Dropwizard/Metrics, Chef/Kitchen, New Relic, Hadoop MapReduce, MySQL, SqlServer, Derby, RabbitMQ, Memcached, Graphite/StatsD, NGINX, C#, .NET, Hive, Sqoop, Python, Cucumber, Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, Git, Perforce -
Software Engineer (Biomedical Scientist)Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 2004 - 2006Livermore, Ca, UsFull-stack engineer working with Dr. Lisa Stubbs in the Genome Biology Division.I was responsible for designing and writing Java-based genomic software including applications and tools to annotate the human genome.I designed and built all aspects of a public web-based application to provide the international scientific community with access to the group's genomic annotation data; this work was published in a peer-reviewed journal. The application included components for analyzing and maintaining internal data, managing work flow, user authentication and tracking, synchronizing internal data to external data sources, flagging user-generated data in response to changing external data, and posting user-generated data to external sites for display.Technologies: Java, Tomcat, MySQL, Struts, svn -
Software EngineerLabvelocity 2001 - 2002Full-stack engineer at a startup specializing in servicing life science laboratory researchers.I was the technical lead for the integration of a product review site acquired by LabVelocity into the main website; I supervised a contractor who assisted in the work. The integration involved: migrating review data into LabVelocity's data model and database; extensive rewriting of the product review site to support LabVelocity data model and to use sound JDBC programming practices; enhancing LabVelocity website functionality to support product reviews.I developed a system to provide real-time updates to Lyris List Manager running on a PostgreSQL database with end-user data gathered from the LabVelocity website and stored in an Oracle database.I developed components enabling subscription website users to share documents on-line.I enhanced Oracle-based universal product catalog search system to accommodate vendor prioritization and developed tools for vendor ranking.I developed a flat-file data loading system and PL/SQL scripts to affect large-scale database changes thereby saving the content group thousands of work hours in manual data entry and corrections.Technologies: Java, Oracle, PL/SQL, ATG Dynamo, Postgres, Lyris List Manager, XML, HTML, Javascript, Python, Perforce

Production EngineerLabvelocity 2000 - 2001Engineer at a small startup specializing in servicing life science laboratory researchers.I brought sanity and efficiency to informal or non-existent QA, release, and monitoring processes resulting in an increase in site uptime, a reduction in bug frequency, and improved project delivery timeliness.I implemented continuous website monitoring using custom Python scripts. Prior to this, the website monitoring was manual.I played the lead role in the adoption of a QA program that resulted in substantive increases in quality and timeliness of code releases. I authored the blueprint for the QA process, worked with the engineering department and testing manager to finalize the plan, participated in hiring a Release Engineer, and oversaw successful implementation of the QA process.I took over management of Perforce source control software and added automated safeguards to ensure data recoverability in the event of a system failure.I developed user-facing portions of the website using Java, JavaScript, and HTML.Technologies: Java, Oracle, PL/SQL, ATG Dynamo, HTML, Javascript, Python, Perforce

Content AnalystLabvelocity 2000 - 2000I designed specialized search parameters for a small startup servicing life science laboratory researchers. On my own initiative, I self-taught myself technologies that I could leverage to improve group productivity. Specifically, I increased the efficiency and happiness of the content team by automating repetitive browser interactions through the use of scriptable macros. I wrote and maintained a suite of macro scripts for the team.On my own time, I taught myself JavaScript, identified JavaScript-related bugs in the website's UI, and then submitted bug reports with fixes to the engineering department.I was transferred into the engineering group.
