With over 40 years of experience in Telecom and Datacom, I have seen the industry change from small 2-layer PCB assemblies with a few dozen Thru-hole parts to very large 24+ layer PCB with surface mount parts on both sides of the PCB. My initial background was in analog design and that supports my current background in power supply design, power distribution, clocking and timing distribution, High Speed SERDES, and other similar "analog-ish" things. I don't do software, I don't design FPGAs, but I design with FPGAs. And I leave RF design to the magicians. I also do PCB layout using Altium Designer. My understanding of the underlying electrical impact of the layout gives me a significant advantage when layout out a PCB. And although I don't do RF design, I have done RF layout work.
