In the world today, the three most important trends affecting the directions businesses must take are historical, political, and technological. Without a basic understanding China’s 5,000 year history, particularly the hundred years of humiliation before the founding of The People’s Republic of China in 1949, one cannot understand today’s China. For more than forty years, I have followed closely the relationship between the US and East Asia, particularly China – from before Ping-Pong Diplomacy to today. After Richard Nixon’s trip to China in February, 1972, US interest in China surged. In early 1979, after the January 1st diplomatic relations were established, Deng Xiaoping made his historic visit to the US. Since his reforms were implemented, we have witnessed dramatic changes, economic growth, poverty reduction, and technological advancements. Perhaps poverty reduction is the most impressive – more than 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty. For most of this period of time, I have lived in Asia, specifically in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China and witnessed these changes first hand. I was actively involved in developing business with East Asia, initially supplying products from Japan’s steel mills to the US oil industry. Later, with my background in Asian Studies focused on Chinese and Japanese language, literature, and history, I established Dexter Pacific Corporation and developed business across a broad range of industries, focusing on trade between the US and China which eventually expanded to Australia, New Zealand, EU, South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Over these years, we have experienced the introduction of many technological advancements, many of which are useful tools and some of which have seriously impacted long established retailers, wholesalers, and other businesses. I believe my experience and expertise can be of value to companies in solving problems related to developing business, improving existing business, or advice on investments on either side of the Pacific Ocean.
