Historic Environment Field Advisor
In my role with English Heritage, my key responsibilities were associated with Heritage at Risk, and giving monument management advice on designated Heritage Assets to partners such as Natural England and the Forestry Commission.I covered the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Surrey (over 1,700 Scheduled Monuments), from coastal landscapes to high chalk Downland. The majority of my work with English Heritage entailed responding to requests for consultation advice from Natural England for the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme. In my advice, I would consider the potential for capital works including badger eviction, large scale scrub clearance, archaeological fieldwork etc and would advise on longer-term management for the duration of the landholder’s agreement.I would also write briefs for work, and guide Natural England staff through the tendering process, and through any Scheduled Monument Consent applications etc.
Historic Environment Advisor
Whilst working for English Heritage, I undertook two 6 month periods of part-time work for Natural England, the first seconded from English Heritage, and the second directly employed. In my role with Natural England, I would give in-house advice to Natural England staff on both designated and undesignated Heritage Assets, and to landowners and occupiers both pre- and post application.I would write briefs for work for a number of asset types including Scheduled Monuments and Parks and Gardens, and for a wide variety of surveys, excavation, and scrub clearance etc.
