I am a registered patent attorney. I represent biotech and pharmaceutical companies in all aspects of patent counseling and prosecution, including patent portfolio development, life cycle management, peer review of patent portfolios, transactional and financing IP due diligence, post-grant proceedings and both offensive and defensive patent strategy.Over the years, I have been named a “Life Science Star” by LMG Life Sciences (2012-2019) and an “IP Star” by Managing Intellectual Property (2019). For a venture-backed company repurposing a drug product that had earlier failed phase 3 clinical trials in a different indication, I designed and implemented a strategy for newly claiming the drug substance per se, including advice on new in vitro experiments, and drafting, filing and prosecution of a new patent family, achieving allowance of Orange Book-listable claims shortly after acquisition of the company for $325M upfront plus $120M in contingent value rights. For another venture-backed company, I designed and executed a patent strategy that led to new drug substance and drug product claims for a complex mixture API in phase 1 clinical trials; the company was acquired for $200M upfront, and the acquirer was then itself purchased for $1.2B. More recently, I have advised two pre-public companies on precision medicine patenting strategies for drugs being repurposed from a first intended indication to a new indication. For other clients, I am working on next-generation patent families drawn to new salt forms, new dosage regimens, and non-genotypic patient selection. From 2013-2015, I prosecuted a second generation Humira patent family world-wide, including coordinating 5 law firms in defense of the granted European patent against 15 opponents.I have significant post-grant experience, having represented clients before the PTAB as lead counsel in interference proceedings, inter partes reviews, ex parte and inter partes reexamination proceedings, and appeal from ex parte reexamination, inter partes reexamination, and ex parte prosecution.
