Dr. Burleson wrote the proposals and worked with the team through the GCSP network to official launch the UH Grand Challenge Scholars Program in October 2021. During this time he led to the recruitment of the first three cohorts of students and integrated the program into ongoing college efforts in the First Year Experience. Through these efforts annual internal funding was acquired to support a sustained engagement in this student success program.
Founding Director For Engineering Student Innovation And Design Experience (Eside)
Dr. Burleson worked to transform the Cullen College Engineering Design Experience for graduating juniors and seniors to encourage student innovation and success in developing unique multidisciplinary projects addressing critical societal challenges. He worked with companies to develop pitch and design competitions for all students in the college across all levels. He led and acquired funding for multiple student collegiate competition in the area of hydropower and wind energy through the Department of Transportation. He developed course plans for multidisciplinary approach to capstone design courses and taught an Advanced Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship course where a student team finished 3rd in a campus wide innovation competition. Dr. Burleson’s contributions enhanced innovation and success for UH Engineering students involved in the Cullen College Design Experience as well as helping accomplish the CCE Vision 2020 strategic plan and 50-in-5 goals.
