Principal Investigator: Dr. Robert Raffai, PhD-Apolipoprotein E (apoE), protects against atherosclerosis by removing cholesterol-rich atherogenic lipoproteins from the blood. A focus of our research is aimed at elucidating the mechanisms by which apoE participates in promotion of atherosclerosis regression. We also investigate the role of diabetic hyperglycemia in increasing the progression and impairing the regression of atherosclerosis. Our last focus is centered on investigating the pathobiology of chronic heart failure in mice that survive myocardial infarctions caused by occlusive coronary atherosclerosis. Experiments are conducted on a novel strain of transgenic hypomorphic apolipoprotein E (hypoE) mice that were developed in the laboratory in order to investigate the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms responsible for apoE's ability to promote atherosclerosis regression.
