About Dan Cornick
Hugely passionate for digitalisation, with a strong interest in BIM and computational design – I started my career as a CAD technician, using Revit, Rhino and AutoCAD all day everyday for years on end. In 2014 I stumbled across an early version of Dynamo, which introduced me to the world of visual programming, but more importantly the development of code to automate repetitive tasks and time consuming changes. I quickly learnt Python and C# alongside Grasshopper too. Equally with an understanding of complex geometry and studying a part-time BEng(Hons), I was able to utilise these skills to work on parametric projects both nationally and internationally.Projects like British Antarctic Survey’s Discovery Building, automating the drawing production for modular CLT houses, or a structural frame generator for embodied carbon comparison between materials for various grid options for an innovation district in Italy. Several years later with further industry experience, my knowledge of analysis & design, software & coding. Individually it makes me an engineer, a technician & a coder. Together it allows me to sit in a hybrid role as a computational designer.Not always somebody who wants to be directly designing buildings, but perhaps somebody who wants to build the code and ‘digital things’ the industry so desperately needs. Tools like my own RAPTOR platform, or steel-reuse developed at LSL. Or trying to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the drawing/design process. These are all tools that years ago would have seemed scary to build, but now it just feels like a natural progression.
