About Dan Determan
Dan's cartographic and geodetic experience spans over 25 years. He graduated from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) with a bachelors degree in Geography/Cartography in 1989. In 1992 Dan started working for the Dept. of Defense’s (DoD’s), Defense Mapping Agency (DMA). While working as a data extraction cartographer with DMA, Dan returned to college focusing on math and statistics. He began work as a geodesist with DMA in 1996. As a geodetic surveyor, Dan performed many geodetic and geophysical surveys around the world. These surveys included Conventional, First and Second Order Leveling, GPS, Absolute and Relative Gravity, Astronomic Position and Azimuth, Airfield Safety Surveys, and many other specialized surveys required by the DoD. After over 10 years as a geodetic surveyor with, DMA, then NIMA, and currently the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), Dan moved to NGA’s GPS Monitor Station Network Control Center (MSNCC) as an Orbit Analyst. There he was responsible for monitoring all aspects of the GPS System, including the satellite orbits, signals, clocks, ground monitoring stations, and all segments/components of the GPS system (ie. space, ground, and control segments). He was also responsible for collecting and submitting all of the satellite data for developing NGA’s precise ephemeris for distribution to the USAF. In 2010, Dan began working for the US Geological Survey’s (USGS’s) Earthquake Science Center (ESC) at Caltech, in Pasadena California. There, he was the geodesist responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Southern California Integrated GPS Network (SCIGN). The SCIGN network is used for crustal deformation studies and other research, and has been integrated into the new Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system, ‘Shake Alert’ in Southern California. In June of 2018, Dan accepted his current position as the National Geodetic Survey’s (NGS’s) Regional Geodetic Advisor for the Northwest (WA, OR, ID).
