About Dan Downs
I have been hooked on computers and technology since around 2nd grade. It started with games, a cousin's Atari, and copying the BASIC code from an issue of Compute! onto our family IBM PC. By 7th grade, 1993, coding started to take center stage, with the help of two friends we wrote a helicopter game in BASIC for the science fair. After that I taught myself C++, then picked up Pascal in high school and soon a job which I turned from field entry into coding. Since then I've been a professional software engineer since 1996, shipping to production in 12 languages and relational DBA experience going back to 1999. I am drawn to complex systems and how to improve efficiency and/or remove complexity. I regularly read about OS and CPU architectures and their improvements to learn what bottlenecks I should be aware of, what has been fixed, and new performance related techniques and how these will effect various algorithms. I enjoy this field because it ties together art, creating, design, and engineering to produce something useful. Plus the finish line keeps moving the more I learn so there is always something new. Most recently I've been dabbling with Arduino, for some home automation projects, which everyone that likes programming or has an interest in it should do.

Design, develop, and manage software projects start to finish from our CMS system, online training system used by hundreds of companies to train their HVAC technicians, to a monthly billing application. Other responsibilities involve server setup and administration (windows / linux), networking (routing/firewall/vpn), and general management of development team.- Every project has been 100% from scratch to launch then continued maintenance.- We started development of our CMS (PagePilot) back in the fall of 2001. Responsibilities include feature consideration, backend / database / server / UI design and implementation, managing our development staff and moving the bar up.- The monthly billing application (SwiftWire) helps HVAC contractors automate monthly credit card and ACH payments. Through this I've gained experience with running transactions through Authorize.net, IC Verify, NMI, and Paypal. This has been a secondary project that I develop and maintain.- Server maintenance, both in office and co-located, windows and linux. We provide our customers with email hosting and continue to grow our solution to fit customer responsiveness demands.- Part of design and implementation team for Connections, an online training system contracted through us. It tied together offline and online labs and testing and was used by a few hundred HVAC contractor companies to manage the training of their technicians.

I started as a field setter and quickly turned it into my first development job by automating several tasks of building the forms. Continued by writing several in house utility applications to make daily workflow more efficient, product installers (first DOS then windows), and a GUI editor application for their main product line. Much of this work involved dealing with the ins and outs of PCL5 including a renderer. Also got my start with server administration here.
