My work at Johnson-Matthey consists of three distinct periods:1. Sept 2006-December 2007 – Research Chemist in charge of following objectives: - investigated the use of new PGM metal precursors and innovative methods of preparation of precious metals catalysts for petrochemical industry- scaled-up of various recipes from lab scale to full plant scale production - improved the impregnation method to achieving uniform distribution of the metal phase on different supports- developed catalysts capable of N2O abatement at low temperature and tested their activity2. January 2008 – July 2010 – Catalyst testing Chemist in charge of various test rigs (including very high pressure) for petrochemical industry. Main objectives were:- tested various catalysts in the selective hydrogenation or dehydrogenation reactions, modified the pilot test rigs in order to improve their performance and safe operation- designed and helped building a new fully automated high pressure rig, capable of continuous sampling of both gas and liquid phase- obtained internal funding for new analytical equipment3. Since August 2010 – Catalyst testing Scientist in charge of the FT testing rig facility. Main objectives are:- performing to a high standard catalytic tests and kinetic studies, using a series of fixed bed parallel reactors and CSTRs- maintaining the FT rig and modify it in order to improve its reliability, ease of operation, OEE, safety- participating in discussions about future developments for FT catalysts / help steering research in the right direction to achieve rapid results- developing new characterization methods to study FT catalysts- working closely with chemical engineers and the rest of the FT team to prioritize the work to be done- summarising data for management reports- managing 2 PhD level chemists and 1 Graduate Scientist.

Postdoctoral Reasearch Associate

Cardiff

1. Process intensification in multi-phase reactors - Studied various hydrogenation and hydroformylation reactions using millimetre-scale channel or monolith reactors. The catalysts used were in fixed phase (washcoat), slurry phase or in homogeneous (dissolved) phase2. Novel Au catalysts for Oxidation reactions – Studied various oxidation reactions of alcohols and hydrocarbons (toluene and xylenes) using Au and Au-Pd catalysts3. Helped PhD students with advise and to perform studies – participate at their meetings with their director of research.4. Lectured MSc students the BET theory and the principles behind BET surface area determination5. Obtained funding for new analytical equipment
