Teaching at Otis was an amazing experience for me. I taught Model Making I, II, and III. Starting at the Sophomore level, the students have declared their Toy Design Major, and I created a curriculum that educated them in materials, and how they were used to create Toys. Starting in the Sophomore level, we incorporated a sculpting assignment with Disney to create a Diorama expressing action and use of multiple materials. This required learning how to mold in silicone, and cast in multiple resins, from clear to color. In the MMII class, I structured the focus around machining, vacuuforming, and the use of all of the tools from lathes, mills, table saws, planing, ... The assignments here were geared to teach toward making objects with structure. They also began incorporating their 3D computer skills at this point and did multiple Rapid Prototyping assignments. This is the class where I dedicated 1 surprise class assignment from the semester called the MacGuyver class. The students were presented with boxes of parts, toys, gears, RC devices, and they had 1 hour to build a fantastic working RC toy. It was a full class participation, and they had to present at the end of class. It became a well known assignment in the Toy Design Department, and videos are on line at www.hotbutteredelves.com. MMIII aimed at developing a fully working action figure with all of their known skills from laser cutting, computer modeling, 3D printing, to create a product that would be graded on presentation, design, functionality and craftsmanship. The designs were always very impressive. Teaching at Otis was a great learning experience for me, and I am always happy to see my students working hard in the industry.
