My area of specialization is guidance with young children. Guidance is teaching for healthy emotional and social development. Books I have written in this area include two NAEYC comprehensive membership selections and six editions of a textbook, "A Guidance Approach for the Encouraging Classroom." My column "Guidance Matters" began appearing in the NAEYC journal YOUNG CHILDREN in 2005. My professional experience began with teaching sixth grade in Ohio and Head Start for the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe in northern Minnesota. I hold a doctorate in Teacher Education/Early Childhood from the University of North Dakota. I am en emeritus professor in early childhood and foundations education at Bemidji State University in northern Minnesota, where I taught, did CDA training, supervised student teachers, and directed the Child Development Training Program for almost 40 years.Wife Dr. Julie Jochum and I live in St. Paul and Bemidji Minnesota. Our blended family includes five children aged 47 to 35 and 11 grandchildren--I bring photos to all events :-}). Hobbies include making PapaDanpancakes with grandkids, travel, and outdoor photography. Yep, the old dude does speaking and training.
