I was elected 5 times to the Mercer Island City Council, with each election being a contested one. Mercer Island is a city of 23,000 people located between Seattle and Bellevue, Washington. The 7-person City Council is a non-partisan legislative body having jurisdiction over public safety, roads, parks, social services, development and other local issues.

The Deputy Mayor position is elected by the City Council for a 2-year term. I was elected in January, 2012 and again in January, 2014, completing my term as Deputy Mayor at the end of 2015. In addition to working with the Mayor to handle significant issues being dealt with by the Council and filling in for the Mayor as needed, my primary responsibilities.

My responsibilities at Seabourn were essentially identical to those at Holland America Line. Starting in 2011, Holland America Line assumed management responsibility for the six luxury cruise ships sailing under the Seabourn brand. As a result, my portfolio expanded to 21 cruise ships in total which also meant overseeing an additional 1,500+ persons.

This included a staff of over 100 people in our corporate office and approximately 14,000 people on the ships. The company’s fleet annually offers more than 500 cruises to 415 ports of call in 98 countries, territories.
