I was elected 5 times to the Mercer Island City Council, with each election being a contested one. Mercer Island is a city of 23,000 people located between Seattle and Bellevue, Washington. The 7-person City Council is a non-partisan legislative body having jurisdiction over public safety, roads, parks, social services, development and other local issues (excluding education).

The Deputy Mayor position is elected by the City Council for a 2-year term. I was elected in January, 2012 and again in January, 2014, completing my term as Deputy Mayor at the end of 2015. In addition to working with the Mayor to handle significant issues being dealt with by the Council and filling in for the Mayor as needed, my primary responsibilities are working with fellow Councilmembers to find solutions to the customary and special issues that we confront on a regular basis.

My responsibilities at Seabourn were essentially identical to those at Holland America Line. Starting in 2011, Holland America Line assumed management responsibility for the six luxury cruise ships sailing under the Seabourn brand. As a result, my portfolio expanded to 21 cruise ships in total which also meant overseeing an additional 1,500+ persons working on the Seabourn ships and being responsible for the safety and well-being of thousands of additional guests.

I was in charge of managing almost all aspects of operations for a fleet of 15 large cruise ships including Deck, Engine and Marine Hotel. This included a staff of over 100 people in our corporate office and approximately 14,000 people on the ships. The company’s fleet annually offers more than 500 cruises to 415 ports of call in 98 countries, territories or dependencies carrying in excess of 750,000 guests. Critical areas of fleet operations included safety, environmental protection, security, fuel savings, technology, culinary, guest accommodations, entertainment, crisis management and all other programs that go into operating what is effectively a city at sea.In addition to fleet operations, I was in charge of Port Operations, Purchasing, Newbuilding, Retrofits, Freight & Logistics and management of a private island used by cruise ship passengers. Annual operating budgetary responsibility was in excess of $500,000,000. I was also responsible for providing information to our corporate office and interfacing with the Carnival Corporation Board of Directors and personnel in the Miami corporate office, as required. Holland America Line is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Carnival Corporation.

Overseeing all legal work for Holland America Line and its affiliated companies including Windstar Cruises, Gray Line of Seattle and Westmark Hotels. During this period, Holland America Line more than tripled the size of its fleet. Legal work included negotiating and drafting agreements for major corporate transactions, handling all other corporate, real estate and other business-related legal work, and monitoring all litigation other than personal injury claims.
