I have been a Personal Trainer for 6 years, starting my first business ‘DH Fitness’ in June 2015. In the coming years I built up a strong client base and although I loved the work, I knew there was more so much more to fitness than just the way people look, so started to flip my fitness brand on it’s head by focusing on client overall well-being and mental health. Last year I founded WORKfit, a corporate wellness company, MINDfit, a community interest company and opened a private gym - all focussed on using exercise as a tool to promote positive mental health.It became apparent that not many other people were doing the same as me.Poor mental health impacts 1 in 3 people, exercise is the best tool to promote positive mental health yet only 4% of personal trainers said they feel comfortable giving mental health advice.I saw a huge gap in the market and a huge opportunity to help millions of people. I took it upon myself to create the U.K’s very first award in Mental Health & Exercise Coaching alongside SQA. The goal is to help bridge the gap between counselling, therapy and exercise, make fitness more accessible and encourage people with poor mental health to exercise in an inclusive and supportive environment, along with giving Personal Trainers and sports coaches the tools and skills to do this. The award was finalised in December 2020 and is due to be rolled out all over the U.K. this year.
