Profile bio

About Dan Karner

I have been a Software Engineer for 25 years working mostly on signal processing applications for DoD projects during that time. Specifically I've worked on Sonar, Radar, and Electronic Warfare applications requiring large amounts of data movement and digital signal processing in a real-time environment. Over the last 10+ years, I have been heavily involved in performing much of the signal processing on commodity GPUs, including Nvidia and AMD based processors. I have always been very passionate about optimizing performance; I have found that heterogeneous computing not only provides new challenges and an outlet for that passion but also allows problems to be solved using software that historically required analog processing or firmware (utilizing ASICs or FPGAs), both of which are generally not only harder to develop and maintain but are also much costlier throughout the entire product life-cycle.

Listed skills include Software Engineering, C++, Gpgpu, Radar, and 16 others.

Deputy Technical Director Of Software Engineering

Braintree, Ma, Us

Responsible for all GPU development at Ultra Ocean Systems / Ultra Maritime North America including work on TWS, LGAP, EW, NGSSR - AN/SPS-73(V)18, and various IR&D. Also responsible for the design and development of various other CPU based signal processing applications. This included algorithms such as beamforming, interference rejection, noise estimation and normalization, PPI (Past Position Indicator displays), match filtering, radar calibration, retrospective detection processing, CFAR, etc., all in a high bandwidth SWAP-c constrained environment.

Jun 2011 - 2023

Deputy Technical Director Of Software Engineering

Ultra Electronics - Ocean Systems

Lead Software Engineer on LGAP (Low-Power GPU Accelerated Processor) SBIR effort N132-119 (Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) Software to Accelerate Underwater Acoustic Autonomous Modeling and Processing). As the Principal Investigator for this SBIR, developed a strategy for demonstrating the performance and power improvements of a GPU-based solution over a conventional CPU-based solution for a frequency domain conventional beamformer, including FFT processing. This effort included hardware selection, developing prototype software utilizing OpenCL, ensuring the software was mathematically correct, and writing and presenting several documents and presentations to show an improvement that exceeded the goals set forth in the proposal.Lead Software Engineer on EW Architecture Study. Oversaw the software development of a novel approach to digital data acquisition and signal processing for Electronic Warfare. Designed and developed software CSCIs to buffer and process large amounts of data (ranging from 2.3GB/sec to 8.4GB/sec) in a heterogeneous environment, including an x86 based server and an Nvidia-based GPU utilizing CUDA.Oversee all software development activities within Ultra Electronics – 3 Phoenix/Ocean Systems to ensure each developer is using a unified design and development approach consistent with industry standards and best practices, working closely with the project leads, the software leads, and individual developers. Extensive experience in complex real time signal processing and parallel computing applications and extensively involved in evaluating and selecting hardware and COTS solutions that provide the best value for customers while addressing concerns of size, weight, and power.Responsible for leveraging technologies, both proven and cutting edge, and applying them to our products and also heavily involved in designing architectures and developing software for multiple projects, including a Torpedo Warning System and NGSSR - AN/SPS-73(V)18

2011 - 2023 ~12 yrs

Lead Software Engineer

3 Phoenix, Inc.

Lead Software Engineer for the AN/SPS-74(V) PDR (Periscope Detection Radar) and TDCL (Torpedo Detection Classification and Localization) projects. Specific responsibilities include software design and development of multiple CSCIs including a real-time and an offline analysis mode version of the software. Leadership responsibilities include providing oversight and guidance for development as well as integration activities in both lab and field conditions.Performed multiple prototyping efforts utilizing GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) to execute computationally intensive algorithms that historically were performed in the analog domain, or have required FPGAs. Software was developed using C for CUDA and OpenCL.Developed various GPGPU applications utilizing CUDA running on Nvidia commodity graphics cards. The CSCIs were part of the AN/SPS-74(V)2 PDR system and are planned to be installed as part of the tactical operation of the system. Algorithms developed included digital pulse compression, detection processing, geographical stabilization, and range rate filtering.

2006 - 2011 ~5 yrs

Lead Software Engineer

General Dynamics – Ais

Developed acoustic beamformers for the WSQ-11 TDCL Demonstration project using Intel MKL libraries for maximum performance. Participated in multiple at-sea trials, which concluded in a highly successful demonstration of our torpedo defense capabilities to the US Navy. Served as the Technical Lead for the Torpedo Recognition and Alert Functional Segment (TRAFS) of the AN/SQQ89 USW System. Expanded area of expertise to include Radar by serving as a software engineer on the Periscope Detection Radar program. Wrote various benchmarking applications to test hardware options for the PDR program. Gained knowledge of previous ARPDD system by studying provided code and documents.

2004 - 2006 ~2 yrs

Principal Software Engineer

Digital System Resources / General Dynamics – Ais
