Profile bio

About Dan Lytle

I began my training and experience in the helping professions in my family in 1945. When I was about four years old, I began to realize it is a significant event when there is a discrepancy between what people say and what people do. I also observed that individuals in situtations that were unlikely to improve will cling and chose to stay, fearing change would be far worse. My family provided a cornacopia of diverse individuals to observe and interact with. I learned much but I realized I didn't understand why each was so different. What I saw on the outside in a person's behavior was not a very reliable predictor of their psychological/social/genetic/experiential makeup. I also learned about the power of secrets in families. What appers on the surface does not correlate with what actually happens in the family. Power and control was one of the most important aspects in relationships, although the form of the power and control could be blatantyl physical/forceful/abusive or as subtle and quiet as a look, motion, or word. However, by the time I graduated from high school I held the illusion that I knew a lot about people and psychology. In reality, I knew little even about my self and my family. The power of denial, repression, avoidance, identification with the aggressor, the desire to please to be loved and valued skewed the underlying dynamics and reality. In fact what I learned the most was transference,i.e. how I learned to think and feel on a conscious and unconscious level and behave in my family became molded, shaped, and solidified into who I was as a person. The world was not like my family. I just didn't know that! The relationship, interacting, coping, psychological, behavioral skills I learned growing up were not very effective out in the world. So my goal became to learn new more effective skills so I could become a responsible, independent, autonomous adult able to be an effective, compassionate, human being and skilled therapist.

Listed skills include Crisis Intervention, Group Therapy, Family Therapy, Psychotherapy, and 46 others.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I remain in therapy to work on my issues and maintain a strong therapeutic boundary in my clinical relationships. I have become very interested in early childhood development and post traumatic stress reactions while an infant and child. Healthy early child/mother bonding is crucial to begin the process leading to self esteem, self confidence, and effective independent functioning.

There are many types of' psychotherapy in the United States, and in the world. To have an opportunity to be effective helping someone, you have to have a basic psychological framework that the know well, and an area of other frameworks open to change. You have to believe in yourself, believe in your patient, and believe that there is much more to learn. 1000 years from now we will have learned more than we know today and 1000 years ahead of what we thought 1000 years ago. Your conviction has to be to learn as much as you can about what we know today, and look for the new things we learn from here. A trusted, highly skilled colleague once said to a group of us, that your job is to be as consistent as you can with each patient, do the best you can with each patient, and if the patient gets better it's icing on the cake. The patient is the most important part of his or her change.

Of all the places I've worked, this was the most significant growth experiences to learn about myself and therapy. Individual Therapy, Case Management, Group Therapy, Couple Therapy, Family Therapy, Day Treatment, Crisis Intervention, Milieu Therapy, Expressive Art Therapy, Addiction Therapy, etc. For 16 years I was in an environment where learning to help others was directly associated with learning to help yourself and get help for yourself. When I left there for a different job, I knew I had to put as much effort into continuing to take care of myself as much as I directed my energies into becoming a better Helping Profession Professional.
