As the Chief Operating Engineer II, I am responsible for the team that oversees the daily mechanical operations of the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant, Mainstream Pumping Station, McCook reservoir, MWRD Railroad, and the Racine Avenue Pumping Station. The Stickney water reclamation plant, one of the world's largest plants of its kind, has a maximum plant capacity of 1.4 MGD. Our team of 135 employees is an integral part of monitoring and adjusting plant flow, including rainstorms and CSO events. They also track equipment performance, noting any operational deficiencies, and ensuring equipment repairs are made in a timely manner. We mentor employees, evaluate their job performances, and enforce collective bargaining agreements. We ensure adequate plant staffing, enforce safety policies, and react to unplanned staffing vacancies due to sudden operational changes. We also plan and coordinate total and partial plant shutdowns for scheduled maintenance.
