"The Black Nile," a nonfiction account of my journey down the river Nile through Uganda, Sudan and Egypt, was published in hardcover by Viking Penguin in 2010 and in paperback, with a new Afterword, in 2011. In July 2011, as South Sudan formally seceded from Sudan after decades of war and atrocity, Penguin published a separate electronic edition of the new Afterword as "Revolution on the Nile," my account of the south's peaceful freedom referendum -- and its bloody aftermath.
