About Dan Scott
I am currently a senior PhD candidate in Physics at the University of Cambridge after graduating with distinction with an MRes in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. My current research is in the Integrated Quantum Materials group under Dr. Stephen Rowley on quantum critical phase transitions and novel electronic properties (such as unconventional superconductivity) at low temperatures.I have significant knowledge in a wide range of experimental techniques from room temperature down to low millikelvin, including high precision dielectric susceptibility and resistivity measurements, thermal expansion dilatometry, uniaxial strain, heat capacity, thermal and electrical conductivity, extreme pressure (over 30 kbar), extreme magnetic fields (up to 14T), and beyond, on both bespoke systems and Quantum Design PPMS.I have many years of experience in maintaining, designing, and building custom cryogenic systems. These include pumped He-4 systems capable of reaching base temperatures of 1K and adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (ADR) cryostats operating down to 50mK. I personally designed and implemented the conversion of a 1K system into a low mK ADR with an electrically controlled gas-gap heat switch. I have ample knowledge of thermal isolation for mK systems including kevlar, G10 fiberglass, and capton support structures with low parasitic heat conduction. I have fabricated millikelvin wiring assemblies for coaxial capacitance, resistivity measurements, and thermometry, and manufactured paramagnetic salt pills for use in mK ADRs. I have also written LabView programs to provide user interfaces for operation and measurement in cryogenic probes. I have additional experience in cleanrooms, photolithography, thermal evaporators, helium reliquefier systems, rocking wire saws, and planetary ball mills, as well as high-purity single crystal growth in induction furnaces, vacuum tube furnaces, and floating zone image furnaces, and component design in Autodesk Inventor. I completed my undergraduate studies in the Honors College at the University of Houston, with summa cum laude degrees in Physics (B.S.) and Chinese Studies (B.A.) and minors in Mathematics and Asian American Studies. Outside of my courses, I worked as a teaching assistant (physics), a grader (mathematics), and an undergraduate researcher. My undergraduate research was under the mentorship of Dr. Wei-Kan Chu at the Ion Beam Laboratory in the Texas Center for Superconductivity on the synthesis and properties of metallic nanoparticle alloys.
