I'm a writer and consultant focussed on the broad theme of "attention and society". Recent articles and essays explore topics around the philosophy of technology, digital culture and environmental sustainability, exploring how human capacities of attention and awareness fit into these contexts. A particular interest is the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and themes around embodiment, ambiguity and the mysterious nature of our everyday lived experience - and how this approach dissolves traditional dichotomies like body/mind, self/society and human/nature. My essays for Aeon and my blog on Substack - The Perpetual Beginner - explore some of these themes (linked below). My current work is split three ways: I co-lead work around what it means to be human in the digital era (for Perspectiva); I teach mindfulness to thousands of people around the world in organisational and leadership contexts (with Potential Project); and I run and edit a blog about inequalities, in all their many forms (for the LSE). Running through everything I do lies my interest in attention and presence. Previously, I spent 10 years in senior roles at the Bank of England. As Editor of the Quarterly Bulletin, I oversaw articles on topics ranging from the causes of the global financial crisis through to how money is created and the economics of cryptocurrencies. My own articles on 'mindful economics' and 'the crisis of attention' were featured widely in the media, including: The Sunday Times (front page), Guardian, The Economist, Financial Times, WSJ, Vox, Mail, Express and more, as well as on the Ezra Klein show, Talk Radio and the BBC. I have an interdisciplinary background with three Masters degrees: an MA in Philosophy (UWTSD), where I focussed my thesis on Merleau-Ponty and “presence” (receiving the highest grade ever awarded for the programme); an MPhil in Economics (Cambridge); and an MA in Global Studies (Sophia University, Tokyo), passed with Distinction. I also have a BA in Maths & Philosophy (Leeds, First Class) and, a very long time ago, studied Japanese up to undergraduate degree level…

I co-lead the Digital Ego Project, applying insights from several philosophical and spiritual traditions to some of the emergent challenges for human flourishing in the context of the digital “sphere” of our lives. Senior Researcher - Mindfulness As A Foundational Human CapacityThe Mindfulness Initiative May 2018 - PresentLondon, United KingdomI lead two research strands for The Mindfulness Initiative, a not-for-profit policy institute. The first explores the case for thinking about mindfulness, in civil society, not only as a specific intervention in certain policy spheres (eg education, healthcare and criminal justice) but also as a foundational human capacity. I consider the ways in which mindfulness can help people to connect better to their own values and intentions as well as to other people and the environment. I also explore the ways in which mindfulness can help people to see situations with greater perspective and context. (See, for example, my SOAS talk, linked below.)The second research project considers the potential of mindfulness to shape the economy. My 'Value of Awareness' paper, linked below, sets out why mindfulness could be a core part of the blueprint for a more adaptable and sustainable economy. This is set within the context of two crucial "21st Century" challenges: first, the state of the environment and secondly the pace of technological change and what this means for humanity.Both workstreams draw from the latest scientific evidence about the impacts of mindfulness training programmes and the Mindfulness Initiative's unparalleled network of experts. -

In 2016 we launched KnowledgeBank, a new resource to explain key concepts in a clear, jargon-free way. This pushed the boundaries of central bank communications on the economy and has been highlighted in various speeches by the Governor and Chief Economist.At the same time, I wrote about posts for Bank Underground on the attention economy, mindful economics and the psychology of scarcity and pursued my MA in Eastern & Western Thought. -
Editor, The Quarterly BulletinBank Of England Nov 2012 - Feb 2016The Quarterly Bulletin is one of the Bank of England's flagship publications, setting out the Bank's view on key economic topics - from the productivity puzzle and global financial crisis through to explainers on the economics of cryptocurrencies and money creation.As Editor, I commissioned articles, edited them and oversaw the production process. While Editor, the QB saw a ten-fold increase in readership, becoming the Bank's most downloaded publication (by some way). Many articles (eg on money creation) have had an enduring impact on debates in the field. I made the QB more visually engaging by introducing infographics and video content. These were extremely popular and the most popular video has had over 140,000 views.
