• Communications lead on media and outreach work for the Washington Dept. of Ecology on all major water resources issues and initiatives in Washington state. • Ecology’s liaison with the governor’s communications staff on water resource issues, planning and supporting media events for the governor and the director of Ecology. • Lead communicator for the state of Washington’s response to our historic statewide drought. • Organized and coordinated the involvement of six partner agency representatives for three governor-announced drought declarations and prepared communications materials for media briefings that attracted participation by national media outlets. • Provided information and context to online media, print reporters, bloggers and broadcasters on the drought. • Am the primary source of information for reporters writing on the impacts to water management from major state Supreme Court decisions involving interpretation of state water law. • Co-lead on communications for Ecology’s reclaimed water rule making. The Department of Health is a partner agency in rule making working to ensure that permitting of reclaimed water projects protects water quality. • Managed Water Smart Washington campaign in 2013 to educate the public on statewide water resources management issues and developing alternatives to reliance on the state General Fund for Water Resources activities. • Lead on risk communications and stakeholder outreach for Ecology’s 2009 public safety campaign to inspect more than 200 unpermitted dams and reservoirs in Washington state, some needing immediate repairs and representing “significant hazards” to downstream homes and businesses.

• Lead all strategic communications, public information and awareness campaigns for the Water Resources Program at Ecology, advising the director of Ecology and program manager on messaging, preparing them for media interviews and public presentations, formulating risk communications strategies for the program and the director when necessary. • Supervise communications and outreach staff of 3 for Water Resources, including Web coordinator for the program. • Lead communications for our stakeholder group, the Water Resources Advisory Committee (WRAC); keeping members informed of our work and developing stakeholder participation in and support for major water resource management decisions. Preparing agendas for and facilitating monthly WRAC meetings, arranging presentations, providing written materials and bringing in speakers to discuss water management issues.

As public information officer for instream flow rules, did the media work and stakeholder outreach for water management rulemaking in Washington state. Two instream flow rules under development at the time eventually became law on the Olympic Peninsula, protecting minimum flows for fish yet ensuring adequate, clean water supplies for future growth and development.

Communications for state House lawmakers during the 2007 legislative session. This included writing news releases, newsletters, talking points and video scripts for legislators, coaching them on their response to media inquiries and preparing them for interviews.
