About Dan Patterson

Dan Patterson stepped down as President of Niagara College, in June 2020, after serving for 25 years in this role. Under his leadership, the College tripled its enrolment to 13,000-plus full-time students in over 130 programs with an operating budget surpassing $225 million. Patterson also led the largest capital expansions in Niagara College history with over $300 million of campus redevelopment. Niagara College has honoured Dan with President Emeritus designation, recognising his outstanding service to the College and local communities.Patterson is a strong advocate for the important role post-secondary education plays in economic development. Dan led the creation of innovative learning enterprises at Niagara College, including Canada’s first teaching winery, brewery and distillery. He also helped introduce pioneering programs that serve the needs of emerging industries, like Canada’s first post-secondary credential in Commercial Cannabis Production. Ranking as a leader in applied research for colleges, Patterson established research and innovation centers to support SME's in such areas as advanced manufacturing.In 2021, Dan was honoured by College’s Ontario with the Minister’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2020, Dan was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan). Dan is an active member of the Niagara community and has been recognized for several awards including Canadian Red Cross Power of Humanity, Niagara-on-the-Lake Citizen of the Year, RBC Business Citizen of the Year, St. Catharines and also the NOTL Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellowship Recognition, Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce Community Leadership, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Dan continues to share his knowledge and expertise through involvement in boards at national, provincial and local levels. Dan received his corporate governance certification (ICD.D) from the Rotman School of Business. Currently, he is the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Ontario Centre of Innovation. He is also on the Board of Trustees at Niagara University (Lewiston, New York).Patterson is a graduate of the University of Windsor (BA), The London School of Economics (MSc), and the University of Toronto (MEd/PhD). He also attended Oxford University as a Visiting Fellow at Green Templeton College. In recognition of his achievements within post-secondary education, Patterson was conferred an Honorary Doctorate from Niagara University (New York) and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Brock University.

Highlights include a state-of-the-art Technology Centre and $40 million Applied Health Institute. In 2015, embarked on another capital expansion of $64 million including building of the Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre and expansion of the Canadian Food and Wine Institute.Leads a high performance team of engaged faculty, administrators and staff, as evidenced by the College’s tremendous success and outstanding employee climate survey results. Senior Ontario government representative responsible for negotiating Ontario’s $12 million participation in an industrial Sectoral Training Fund proposal. Played a leadership role in the Ministry’s dealings with key business/labour and education leaders in the community.
