I am a M.S. student studying Electrical and Computer Engineering: Robotics at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. I am looking to gain experience and knowledge through hands-on robotics projects. Recently, I graduated with my bachelor's in mechanical engineering at Umich. Throughout my years at Umich, I have worked for multiple labs on the development of robots and other mechatronic systems for more information you can search below. When working, I love to collaborate with others in developing robots from ideation to final product and I hope to work on biologically inspired robots in the future. As of now, I have solid knowledge and experience in robots, and I especially enjoy the design and analysis side of robotics. I am looking for internships in robotics (and or mechatronics) in design, manufacturing, assembly, and other associated steps. As a worker, I am friendly, and collaborative but also self-sufficient, Furthermore, I am always up for a challenge and will strive for success in whatever I am tackling. Feel free to contact me at altmands@umich.edu.

Mechatronic Systems ResearcherBiologically Inspired Robotics And Dynamical Systems (Birds) Lab Jul 2024 - PresentAnn Arbor, Michigan, United StatesBIRDS Lab is a research lab at the University of Michigan under Professor Shai RevzenMy work was to design and prove an inexpensive, open-source gravity compensation rig for evaluating legged robot performance in low-gravity environments. After completing the design (CAD), I fabricated the rig using commonly-available rapid-fabrication techniques and inexpensive stock materials such as ABS and foamcore sheets. The rig’s performance was evaluated using other robots within the BIRDS lab.

Mechatronic Systems ResearcherEvolution And Motion Of Biology And Robotics (Embir) Lab May 2024 - PresentAnn Arbor, Michigan, United StatesEMBiR Lab is a research lab at the University of Michigan under the mentorship of Professor Talia MooreThe project seeks to develop independent control of Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (FREEs), which are inflatable tubes with embedded inextensible fibers. My work was to design and fabricate an inflation mechanism and characterize the behavior of the controllable FREE.

Lead Mechanical System ResearcherMultidisciplinary Design Program Sep 2023 - Aug 2024Ann Arbor, Michigan, United StatesLead researcher for the chassis design for a modular, low-cost 6-legged robot platform for dynamics and control experiments (FastAnt). This work implemented the drivetrain modules were developed earlier. -
Mechanical Systems ResearcherMultidisciplinary Design Program Jan 2022 - Sep 2023Ann Arbor, Michigan, United StatesDeveloped within the Multilegged Robots and Animal Motion research team, housed in the BIRDS lab, under the guidance of Professor Shai Revzen. My work was focused on the design, manufacturing, and assembly of multiple iterations of a low-cost drivetrain module, which includes a modular planetary gearbox, BLDC motor, and integrated motor controller. The modular planetary gearbox is manufactured through a combination of 3D printed and laser cut parts. -
Mechanical Systems Research ApprenticeMultidisciplinary Design Program Jan 2022 - May 2022Ann Arbor, Michigan, United StatesDeveloped within the Multilegged Robots and Animal Motion research team, housed in the BIRDS lab, under the guidance of Professor Shai Revzen.Redesigned Snaplock 2.0, a low-cost, low-profile connection system that can be used to quickly assemble and disassemble a modular robot. The mechanism is comprised of a plastic piece and a steel plate. The updated design was intended to change the attaching/detaching mechanism from a rotational motion to a linear one. Successive iterations were made for the purpose including, decreasing the difficulty of locking the two pieces together -
Engineering 110 Instructional Aide (Da)University Of Michigan College Of Engineering Aug 2023 - Dec 2023Ann Arbor, Michigan, United StatesTaught students on a weekly basis on topics such as the breadth of disciplines available to study, and opportunities offered. The content of the course is intended to help students better understand and succeed at the University of Michigan. Graded and provided feedback on assignments. Attended weekly staff meeting -
Mechanical SystemsMichigan Mars Rover - Student Project Team Sep 2022 - Sep 2023Ann Arbor, Michigan, United StatesAs a member of this team, using Siemens NX, I designed end-effectors, whose purpose was to scoop soil. One of my designs was successfully theoretically and functionally tested on Siemens NX and was later 3D printed and successfully passed the practical functionality testing. -
Mechanical Systems EngineerMichigan Robotic Submarine Aug 2021 - Sep 2022Ann Arbor, Michigan, United StatesAs a member of this team, I designed the latch mechanism for the hull, intended to prevent water from leaking into the bed of the submarine. For the design of the interface, as well as for functionality testing, I used Siemens NX. Additionally, I prototyped and functionally tested designs for supporting a modular submarine propeller propulsion system. As part of the project, I also designed a support mechanism to hold the submarine in place while it is not submerged in water. -
M-Stem Academy Student Life And Academic FacilitatorUniversity Of Michigan Jun 2022 - Jul 2022Ann Arbor, Michigan, United StatesPlanned and implemented non-classroom activities for M-STEM students, such as scavenger hunts, throughout the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor to help the students familiarize themselves with the campus Tutored students in mathematics at their respective levels (Calculus I, II, III, IV), increasing students’ overall understanding that was seen through exam scores and homework assignments. Supervised students -
Engineering InternCameron Engineering, An Imeg Company Sep 2019 - Mar 2020Woodbury, New York, United StatesPerformed analyses of design schematics to ensure no errors had been madeDevelopment and revisions of presentations on a variety of topics including structural analysis, mechanical and fire protection.Dived deep into understanding the guidelines that structures and other mechanisms need to follow along with the process in which it was developedUnderstanding of the guidelines that structures and other mechanisms need to follow along with the process in which it was developed
