The character, Captain, in the iconic movie Cool Hand Luke, tells Paul Newman's character (Luke), "What we've got here is failure to communicate." The irony in that scene is that Captain is complicit in the failure. But he doesn't know what he doesn't know. He is not alone. Here on my LinkedIn page, I have attached my visual communication strategy. I am a strategic communicator. I am a writer. My expertise is born from experience, to include my role at the Pentagon upon the attacks of 9/11, as lead spokesperson for the National Guard in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina where I represented 54 states and territories, responding to the earthquake in Haiti where we established the first-ever international joint information center, creating a coalition with the private sector where we implemented the first national business emergency operation center, voluntarily deploying to Puerto Rico within hours of Hurricane Maria's impact as the lead spokesperson.... Communicated, cultivated and advocated for collaboration between the U.S. private sector and FEMA, to enhance national preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation of all hazards. Established and maintained a national reputation for effective support to our private sector stakeholders through credible, reliable and meaningful two-way communication. Designed a program for private sector representatives to serve 90-day rotations within the federal government. Created the first-ever National Business Emergency Operation Center. Hosted the first national conference on building resilience through public-private partnerships.

Supervised three branches and 27 employees to provide information to the American public that helps them prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from disasters by establishing and maintaining effective, ongoing relationships with the media to promote the agency’s programs, goals and core values; service our internal and external customers by developing communication strategies that support the agency’s mission; provide disaster victims with timely and accurate information, and managing communications to demonstrate an effective federal response to disasters. Deployed to Haiti in January 2010 and helped orchestrate the first-ever international Joint Information Center in response to a natural disaster.

Led the emergency and risk communication team on homeland security related issues, to include FEMA’s Flood Mitigation programs and CDC’s Personal Preparedness for Pandemic Influenza. On the international, national, state and local fronts, helped organizations meet their goals and change community and personal behaviors.

Provided public affairs counsel to high-ranking general officers, DoD civilians, Governors’ press secretaries, and other senior national-level officials. Translated strategic visions, goals and objectives to deployable, executable and measurable plans and actions. Established policy for public affairs, community support, environmental, and history programs. Primary military spokesperson for the organization of 456,000 men and women. Recognized for my response and leadership during Hurricane Katrina. Earned Humanitarian Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Legion of Merit.

Responded daily to Pentagon Press Corps and national media queries, representing the 1.2 million members of the seven Reserve Force components. Personal PAO within DoD for U.S. Northern Command and the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense. Duties included media travel, writing press releases, answering queries, drafting guidance and input to speeches and briefings for the Secretary of Defense. Present in the Pentagon during the attacks of 9/11, immediately responded and established public affairs continuity for 44 hours straight. Recognized by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs for my actions.
