I have been a professor of economics and statistics at Dakota State University in Madison, SD, since Fall 1996. I have a PhD in economics from the University of Oregon completed that same year. I have been married since 1992. I graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA, with bachelors degrees in economics and computer science with a business emphasis. My professional aspiration has been to be a successful professor at small university. I am fortunate to have found a good fit here at DSU in Madison, SD (near Sioux Falls).Specialties: MBA Program Coordinator starting May 16, Undergraduate Business Programs Coordinator from 2017 to 2022, economics commentator for local and regional media, occasional peer reviewer for various journals, and professional presenter of original research in economics and finance at professional conferences. Latest publication was in 2017 and am working with that co-author on two more. Professional Events: I am to be promoted to MBA Program Coordinator at DSU effective May 16. I serve at the pleasure of my dean. My co-author, Dr. Yenling Chang and I had our most recent research paper accepted for publication by the Journal of Economics and Finance in 2017. The paper called "Bank Risk In a Decade of Low Interest Rates" found that U.S. banks, especially larger banks, still have strong incentives to undertake riskier projects with higher expected returns in order to increase their performance. This of course could lead to a less stable banking system post the 2008 Financial Crisis. We also found that regulations on asset disclosure designed to alert regulators to purchases of risky assets by banks were an unnecessary burden for small, rural banks since they (a) did not hold those assets in 2008 and therefore did not appreciably contribute to the crisis and (b) continue to avoid highly risky assets according to the recent data we examined. Our future research continues to look at both the South Dakota and U.S. banking system with a focus on mortgage lending performance during the Pandemic of 2020.
