I’m accountable for setting and driving Rio Tinto’s innovation strategy, both to accelerate the energy transition and deliver transformational business value. I lead their R&D portfolio, engineering, science, and growth and ventures unit, which includes corporate venture capital, incubation, and commercial scale-up.My career spans academia and industry, and has been in pursuit of tackling complex challenges. I’m at my best when identifying potential disruptors, initiating and driving change, and transforming organisations at pace.I’ve held senior leadership roles in the natural resources and energy industries, including Vice President of Engineering at bp and Global Head of Innovation, Science and Technology at Rio Tinto. While at bp, I also established the emerging and disruptive technology unit, and led the team that created their net zero carbon ambition and strategy. I’ve been on the board of directors for multiple companies, including currently serving as Non-Executive Director on the Ocean Infinity Group Board. Prior to joining industry, I pursued post-doctoral research in fluid and structural dynamics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and held a lectureship in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. I’m a chartered mechanical engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
